THE LACK OF POTASH WILL IMPROVE TOBACCO Experienced 'tobacco - grower Believes That Scfcfcity -Will Prove Beneficial for Next Year's Crop. r'l.'V '-'SI n* ' - ? **? a Mr. E. T. Lucas, of Lucama, N. C., a well-known and successful raiser of fine tobacco, thinks the scarcity of potash will prove be&eft clal rather than otherwise. Writing to the Wilson Times, he says: There has been so much talk u mong the farmers and other people fat' rested, In the lapt few weeks, bout th scarcity of potash, and the probability - of a y poor tobacco crop this year beaarifee of the scar city of potash, that I reel constrained to slW through your paper a sug gestion ^r two based on my experi ence of twonty-seven yearn of raising jgood tobacco. To start with, 1 am firmly of the opinion that the use of a fertiliser [containing a high percentage of pot* ash nor only does not do any good, | but, la my opinion, it is positively harmful to the cultivation of first class. bright, velvety tobacco. Twen ty-live years ago, when the tobacco raised in Wlfson county was far su perior Id teatnre?*nd quality to that raised within the last few ye4rs, the Use of potash, as the principal In gredient of fertilizer, was .not thought of, and the tobacco than r&lfeed was of a velvety, flexible, iough, white quality. The tobacco was not brltle, would not tear eas. I.ly and would not break and be as woody as It has been for. the last few years. y I have recently been on the ware house floors In Wilson and whenever 1 saw a lot of flne, velvety, white tobacco, I looked up the ownor and asked him what kind of guano he| used under that tobacco, and }n ev ery case the answer has been a goods containing 8-2-2 and nothing extra usejl with the fertiliser. Instead of having in this country next year an unusually poor cro'p of tobacco bccause of the lack of pot ash. 1 am firmly of the opinion that the crop, with seasons favorable, will be far superior to the crops of tho last few years, and this I shall at tribute to the inability of the afrm ers to obtatn a high percentage of ptft&sh.
